What you do today, might not be obvious tomorrow, but we need to remember that it's stackable. Meaning that, everything matters... even when we don't think it does.
I was chatting with my brother in law the other day, he was talking about habits and since then I have been pondering about this subject. I didn't study psychology, but in my opinion for anyone working with other people, whether its healthcare, teaching, coaching etc, understanding the human psyche is crucial. I don't intend on going back to school, but I am committed to life long learning and personal growth in this area because I find it all so fascinating. I also believe that working on myself is key to constant improvement in the way I practice physiotherapy and in my ability to care for others.
Why do the majority of humans give up after a short period of time when we don't see results? Is it that our expectations are too high? Do we lack patience? Are we viewing "results" from the wrong perspective? Do we get bored, lose hope and think "what's the point?" The list goes on and it's probably a combination of everything.
If you haven't noticed yet, I like to live life as much as possible according to the KISS principle. So in the case of human beings giving up before we even have a chance to get started, let's just focus on the little things we can do daily that will move us closer to the target.
Essentially, doing a bit more today than we did yesterday. Stay consistent with this model.
When things are going well, its easy.
When things aren't going so well, either you didn't get a good nights sleep, you're having a bad morning or you're just struggling to get through the day for whatever reason, this is when it becomes more challenging. Your ability to bounce back and acknowledge that tomorrow is a new day is what will separate you from the rest.
We will all face challenges, such is life. It's our ability to overcome these dips and realize that we can still move forward...stronger, better and faster.
Time goes by fast, and they say as you get older it goes even faster, so how about we focus on our micro daily habits. Do more today than you did yesterday. Bounce back when you have dips. It's all stackable. Before you know it, you will have not only reached your targets, but you will have also created positive habits that have become automatic.
