Supporting Women's Mental Health Through Movement

Updated: Nov 20, 2021

{The Run for Women, brought to you by the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart™ program is a 5K Run/Walk, and 10K Run taking place in 18 cities across Canada.}

For those of you who do not know me, here is my shpeel. I am a registered Physiotherapist in both Ontario and Quebec and have my own practice through The Movement Co, a clinic based in the Glebe (Ottawa, ONT). I am also a Research Assistant on chronic pain through McGill University. Physical activity has been a vital component of my personal overall well-being and through my practice, I hope to encourage as many people as possible to integrate regular exercise into their weekly schedules. I am passionate about preventing chronic illness and simply put; helping people move more and feel better.

Why do I share this now? Why here? Because the "Run for Women: walk or run for women's mental health" is just around the corner and this event is aligned perfectly with my physiotherapy practice goals. I am very keen to support mental health events, especially when movement is involved! (Click here for details: https://www.runforwomen.ca/Our-Story.aspx )

Health is such an important word and it holds physical, mental, spiritual and emotional meaning. If you don't know where to start along your personal health journey, begin with some exercise. The word exercise does not mean run a marathon, it does not mean you have to be almost hyperventilating, exercise simply means; activity involving physical effort. If you can start small and work your way up to 30 minutes per day, you are well on our way. I believe, and there is ample evidence to suggest, that if we move our bodies consistently, we are also setting the foundation for the four pillars of health to fall into place.

There is so much to consider when speaking about mental health, but today lets begin with some simple support.
